SHINGLE SEALER™ Impact Resistance: Testing the Durability and Protection of Asphalt Shingles

SHINGLE SEALER™ Impact Resistance: Testing the Durability and Protection of Asphalt Shingles

When it comes to protecting an asphalt shingle roof, durability is about more than just keeping water out. A roof coating must also be able to withstand the physical stresses that roofing materials can experience over time. Impacts, surface deformation, and changing environmental conditions can all affect the long-term performance of a roofing system. That's why Nationwide Coatings evaluates the performance of its SHINGLE SEALER™ through technical testing, including impact resistance testing based on ASTM D2794-93.

Why Impact Resistance Matters for Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt shingles are continuously exposed to outdoor conditions, including wind, rain, temperature fluctuations, and physical impacts. Over time, these conditions can contribute to wear and deterioration. A protective roof coating should do more than simply cover the shingle surface. It should also maintain its integrity when subjected to physical stress.

Impact resistance is an important performance consideration because it evaluates how well a coating film withstands sudden deformation without developing visible cracks. A coating that maintains its integrity during impact testing demonstrates an important aspect of its physical durability. For homeowners and roofing professionals looking to extend the service life of existing asphalt shingles, understanding how a roof coating performs under these conditions can help when evaluating available roof restoration solutions.

SHINGLE SEALER™ ASTM D2794-93 Impact Resistance Testing

Nationwide Coatings conducted impact resistance testing on SHINGLE SEALER™ using a modified version of ASTM D2794-93, the Standard Test Method for Resistance of Organic Coatings to the Effects of Rapid Deformation (Impact). This testing method evaluates the ability of a coating and its underlying substrate to withstand a sudden impact without developing cracks.

For the SHINGLE SEALER™ evaluation, two coats of the product were applied to a standard roofing shingle at an application rate of 300 square feet per gallon. The coated shingle was then placed over a 0.025-inch-thick metal plate. The coating had a dry film thickness of 2 mils and was allowed to cure for 24 hours before testing.

The test used a four-pound falling weight and a hemispherical impact punch with a 0.5-inch diameter. By dropping the weight from different heights, the testing apparatus generated controlled impact forces against the coated roofing shingle. The impacted areas were then examined for signs of cracking or coating failure.

SHINGLE SEALER™ Passed Impact Testing at 144 Inch-Pounds

The results documented in Nationwide Coatings' January 1, 2024 test summary demonstrated that SHINGLE SEALER™ passed all three recorded impact tests.

At a 24-inch drop height, equivalent to 96 inch-pounds of impact force, the coating passed under intrusion conditions. Testing was then increased to a 36-inch drop height, producing 144 inch-pounds of impact force. SHINGLE SEALER™ passed this test under intrusion conditions as well.

The product was also evaluated under extrusion conditions at the same 36-inch drop height, representing another 144 inch-pounds of impact force. SHINGLE SEALER™ passed this test too.

These results demonstrate that the tested SHINGLE SEALER™ coating system maintained its integrity without recorded failure at the highest impact level documented in the report: 144 inch-pounds. Both intrusion and extrusion testing produced passing results at this level, providing measurable evidence of the coating's resistance to impact-related deformation under the specified laboratory test conditions.

What Is ASTM D2794-93 Impact Resistance Testing?

ASTM D2794-93 is a recognized test method used to evaluate the resistance of organic coatings to rapid deformation caused by impact. During the procedure, a coated test panel is positioned beneath an impact punch. A weighted cylinder is raised to a predetermined height and released, allowing it to strike the punch and deform the coating and substrate.

The impact resistance is expressed in inch-pounds, which represent the force generated by the falling weight. The test evaluates whether the coating develops visible cracks following the impact. Testing can include intrusion, where the impact deforms the panel inward, and extrusion, where the deformation occurs in the opposite direction.

For roofing applications, this type of testing provides useful information about the physical durability of a coating film. It helps manufacturers evaluate how a protective coating responds to sudden mechanical stress rather than relying solely on appearance or general product descriptions.

It is important to note that Nationwide Coatings' report identifies this evaluation as a modified ASTM D2794-93 procedure using in-house apparatus and testing devices. The report also explains that the method may differ from the actual ASTM procedure and that numerical results are best used for comparisons conducted within a single laboratory.

An Additional Performance Measure for Roof Restoration

For property owners considering asphalt shingle restoration, selecting the right roof coating involves evaluating several performance characteristics. Adhesion, flexibility, permeability, weather resistance, and impact resistance can all contribute to understanding how a coating performs as part of a roof maintenance strategy.

SHINGLE SEALER™ is designed for asphalt shingle roof applications, and its documented impact resistance results provide another piece of technical information for homeowners, contractors, and roofing professionals evaluating the product. Combined with other product performance testing, impact resistance testing helps provide a more complete picture of the coating's physical properties.

Rather than focusing exclusively on cosmetic improvements, Nationwide Coatings emphasizes the importance of evaluating roof coating performance through testing and technical data. This allows customers to make more informed decisions when considering solutions for maintaining and protecting existing asphalt shingle roofs.

Protect and Restore Your Asphalt Shingle Roof with SHINGLE SEALER™

If you are looking for an asphalt shingle roof coating backed by documented performance testing, SHINGLE SEALER™ is worth considering. Its modified ASTM D2794-93 impact resistance test demonstrated passing results at 144 inch-pounds under both intrusion and extrusion conditions.
